If something happened to me, what would happen to my horse?
You often hear about the horses that end up at auction or neglected. But one of the quiet realities of rescue work is this: many of the horses who arrive here are deeply loved.
These horses come to Colorado Horse Rescue not because they are unwanted, but because life changed.
Illness. Injury. A diagnosis no one saw coming. A body that can no longer lift hay bales or manage winter chores. Owners face some of the most difficult moments of their lives. When the question isn’t whether they love their horse, but if they can keep providing the care their horse needs.

A safety net for horses
Because of you, owners and their horses are not alone. Through CHR’s Leg Up program, horses are kept safe with their families by covering care, hay, and boarding until situations stabilize. You ensure that even when life becomes overwhelming and uncertain, horses are safe, and their families receive compassion and a helping hand.
When horses need more than temporary support, Colorado Horse Rescue’s gates are open.

Woodrow was one of those horses.
This 26-year-old Tennessee Walker came to CHR in mid-2023 when his owner became ill. Making the decision to surrender him was incredibly difficult, but it was done out of love and responsibility.
After spending time at CHR, Woodrow spent over a year in a foster home as a companion horse, providing steady presence and comfort to his pasture mate. When that companion passed away, he returned to the rescue.
Recently, Woodrow found his new loving, forever home! His adopter is learning horsemanship alongside him, building their partnership step by step. His adoption marked the first of ten horses placed this year.
In February alone, six more horses arrived from private owners navigating urgent health and life changes. Each surrender represents a family making an extraordinarily hard choice, an act of love.
Your support makes this possible. It provides peace of mind in uncertain moments, dignity in vulnerable transitions, and a safe landing when circumstances shift beyond control. Thank you for believing in a better world for horses.
