Beyond the Finish Line

Former Racehorses Get a Second Chance at CHR

Each spring, the Kentucky Derby captures national attention. It’s a symbol of prestige in the racing world, known for its storied history and the elite horses that compete. This year, every horse in the starting gate shared something remarkable: a bloodline tracing back to Secretariat, one of the most iconic racehorses in history.

That same legacy lives on in Arlo, a horse currently in the care of Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR), and a descendant of Secretariat himself. But unlike his famous ancestor, Arlo’s racing career was over before he could make it to an official race due to a heart condition, leaving him at a crossroads. His story is a reminder that even well-bred horses may find themselves in need of a safe landing and a fresh start.

The world of Thoroughbred racing is vast, with thousands of foals born each year in pursuit of success on the track. While not every foal will go on to race, the sport remains the primary purpose for the breed. According to data from The Jockey Club, 1,181 stallions bred over 28,000 mares in 2023, resulting in about 18,000 foals in 2024. Just a few years later, only 20 of those horses will make it to the starting gate of the Kentucky Derby, one of racing’s most prestigious events.

Some go on to find new careers and loving homes, while others slip through the cracks with uncertain futures. Fortunately, new paths are possible, and that’s where Colorado Horse Rescue comes in.

Colorado Horse Rescue provides a vital safety net for horses from all walks of life, including off-track Thoroughbreds in search of a new direction. Often started in training as early as age two, these horses may leave the track due to injury, lack of speed, or temperament.

At CHR, we believe a horse’s worth isn’t defined by race results or prize money. We see them for who they are: thoughtful companions, strong partners, and gentle souls capable of forming deep bonds with humans.

Each year, many young off-the-track Thoroughbreds are welcomed through our gates at CHR. Whether rehabilitating from injury or in need of a restart in training, we are proud to support these deserving horses and set them up for future success.

Through compassionate care, expert rehabilitation, and thoughtful matchmaking, we help former racehorses transition into new, fulfilling roles, as riding companions, therapy partners or simply beloved pasture pets. We believe a horse’s value isn’t measured by a stopwatch or prize money, but by their personality, presence, and the joy they bring to the people who love them.

It’s time to broaden the narrative. Not every horse will be a legend like Secretariat, but every horse deserves to be safe, loved, and valued.

As long as horses find themselves in need of a new beginning, organizations like CHR will remain essential. We’re here to offer hope and opportunity to those who need it, and to show that beyond the finish line, these horses can find new purpose and meaningful partnerships.

Hang tight while we go get your horse!
