At-home euthanasia is a significant and often unexpected expense.
Euthanizing your horse at home is often the kindest option. Without financial support, even responsible owners may face impossible choices, and horses can end up in unsafe situations such as auctions. Compassionate Endings exists as a safety-net, ensuring every horse receives a peaceful and kind goodbye – regardless of financial circumstances.

How do I know when it’s time?
Knowing when to say goodbye to your horse can feel overwhelming. Owners are encouraged to use the sample questions below and research The Five Domains to help objectively assess their horse’s quality of life. It’s recommended to consult your veterinarian to confirm any end-of-life decisions.
Why is it often kindest to euthanize a horse in the familiar setting of home?
When euthanasia is performed at home by a licensed veterinarian, the process is peaceful, controlled, and free from unnecessary stress. The horse can remain in a familiar pasture or stall, surrounded by trusted people they know and, when appropriate, nearby herd mates. In situations where quality of life has declined, and recovery is no longer possible, choosing euthanasia at home can be the final act of love – ensuring a horse’s last moments are calm, safe, and kind.
Does my horse need to be halter-trained?
Yes. Your horse must be catchable and able to tolerate basic vet treatment in a reasonably safe manner.
Is this resource only for horses adopted through CHR?
No. Compassionate Endings is available to any horse in need, regardless of adoption history, age, breed, or background.
