AMIRA

AMIRA

Category: Staff
Age: 8
Gender: Mare
Height: 14.3

Breed: Quarter Horse

Bio: Amira in some languages translates to "princess." I'd like to be somebody's princess in the future, but I've got a lot of trust issues. I'm making remarkable progress, so they tell me, and my best match will need to be an adopter with patience to spare, a tool box with the lid open, and other training resources when he or she hits a tough spot in my training. Fortunately, I'm young in age with beauty to spare and a desire to connect with humans...no health or maintenance special needs.

Handler Experience: Trainer - Has an advanced skill set plus several years of experience in successfully teaching multiple types of green horses.

Bio: I have taken him for trail rides and have worked him in both an outdoor and indoor arena setting. I ride with a simple tom thumb snaffle bit which he does very well with. He is very calm and has an in your pocket personality. Immediately trusting, he loves people, and wants to be around us. He has only spooked regarding a cow that ran at us and the vet but otherwise is very non spooky, even by himself. I have thrown both an English and western saddle on him, ridden bareback, etc. He is not particularly used to trotting under saddle and generally tries to transition to loping quickly. He is very forward and does not take much asking to go making him a very fun ride. His training is all predominantly trail based but he is quick to learn and knows a fair amount. Bio: Lila was started in the Meeker Mustang Makeover, and successfully adopted out. For about a year she has been in under saddle training, and started very well. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with neurological issues causing her to trip at random which makes her unsafe for riding. She trailer loads perfectly, stands well for farrier, is a lovely companion, gets along with other horses in various herds, is an easy keeper, is good for grooming, and loves attention. My hope for her is that she finds a loving home that wants to keep her as a cute companion for their other horses. Her only needs are the basics :feet trimming, annual teeth floats/checks, grass hay, water. No special maintenance required, and I have my vet ready to answer the phone to touch on any questions or concerns; however, multiple vets are not worried about her future as a companion horse. Her neurological issues will not worsen, they are just as is.

ONYX (CL)

ONYX (CL)

Category: Non-Riding Companion
Age: 12
Gender: Gelding

Breed: Standardbred Cross

Bio: Pasture pet/lead line deluxe! Mr. Onyx is a super sweet, super cuddly, ~10-year-old teddy bear that just wants love and attention. He is sweet, loving, easy to work with, easy to get along with and is the bottom of the herd. He is an amazing babysitter/ companion for other horses and loves his weanlings. He loves being the big brother. He is broke to drive but I don’t think he knows much about being ridden. He is an angel in disguise that just wants love. He is companion/lead line only due to the formation of ringbone in his front left coronet band. He’s not lame and it doesn’t seem to bother him much. He does take an “off” step every once in a while but nothing super obvious.

SALLY (CL)

SALLY (CL)

Category: Riding
Age: 16
Gender: Mare

Breed: Quarter Horse

Bio: Sally is a 15yo Sorrel/Liver grade mare. Due to some arthritis, she would be best in a light riding home with an intermediate rider and handler. I have put two kids on her, my granddaughter who is 2 rode her bareback with one leading and one holding her, and Sally was perfectly calm. Also, an 11 yo intermediate rider, and again Sally was very calm and well behaved. I bought her over 1.5 years ago to be a trail horse, but I have not had the time to work with her that she needs. I ride her and work with her about once per week in my arena and on the trails and dirt roads around my neighborhood, as I have had trouble with her loading in the trailer. She has never bucked, crow hopped to anything like that, and is fun to ride as she is responsive and moves out nicely. She had an accident while being tied, so I usually put her on a blocker tie, but she is best ground tied, which I have been training her to do and she does pretty well! I sincerely believe that she would really come a long way if she were given the proper attention and training that she deserves, 3-4 times per week would be great for her. She loves attention and comes to me from the pasture, she's easy for me to catch, groom, saddle, loves to go for a hand walk down the road. Doesn't spook at cars, or dogs. I ride my atv around her all the time, and there are trucks, cars and motorcycles going by regularly, as well as low flying airplanes, so she's used to many noises. She really is a sweet sweet horse that just needs the right owner, one who wants to ride casually, and enjoys training and seeing the progress come along. Someone who has some experience, is patient and has a good way with natural horsemanship. She is not dominant here, as my gelding is pretty much the king around her, she got along with him from the first minute I put them together.

SONORA (CL)

SONORA (CL)

Category: Non-Riding Companion
Age: 21
Gender: Mare

Breed: Quarter Horse

Bio: Sonora is incredibly sweet, affectionate, smart, and reasonable (doesn't spook at much of anything). She was a natural horsemanship clinic horse for a trainer for several years when she was younger and was started as a cutting horse. (She is a registered quarter horse, cutting bred.) She is easy to handle and easy to keep, other than needing medication daily and needing to be clipped once a year. She was diagnosed with Cushing's disease in 2021 and has been on Prascend twice a day since. Her coat is shedding out better each year since she's been on the medication, but she still needs to be clipped in early summer and will most likely continue to need that, especially if she lives somewhere where it gets hot in the summer. She is living in New Mexico now and doing really well.  I have had a major life change and really can't afford to take care of her for much longer. I really want her to go to a home where she can be out in plenty of space with other horses or at least one other horse. She is a great companion horse and she is safe for kids to be around. I have put kids on her and led them around and she does great. I haven't ridden her in over ten years so she would need work before being ridden which is why I said "non-riding". She also has a heart condition (Atrial Fibrillation) that prevents her from being worked too hard. The vet says that she can walk, trot, even lope gently - she can do gentle work in a round pen or arena, but nothing where her heart rate is going to get really high. I have recently started training her with positive reinforcement training and she is doing well with it. With enough time, I think I could get her to where I could ride her again- just to be able to go on trails and do low-key stuff. I currently take her on walks on trails and let her swim in the river nearby and she loves that. Unfortunately I just don't have the money to continue to work with her or to provide her with the life she deserves. I love her deeply and can only let her go to a home where she will never be abused or treated harshly. She needs to be treated with love and care and she needs her medication for the rest of her life. I have had her since she was two years old so I know her whole life history and can share that with an interested home/family.

SUNNY (CL)

SUNNY (CL)

Category: Unstarted
Age: 8
Gender: Gelding

Breed: Mustang

Bio: Sunny's temperament is sweet and loving. He has been handled enough to feel affectionate and engaged with people. He is catchable, has basic ground manners, and is good with obstacles although his trailer experience is limited. He will follow you around, and expects no rewards other than forehead scratches. He would make a great companion horse. As far as being started under saddle, Sunny needs someone advanced/expert in mustang training. He is a willing participant to learning new things but in the beginning of something new he tends to panic and lash out. His default is combative & fighting tendencies when he panics. He needs a handler that is calm, confident, puts him in his place, is sure to end training on a positive note, allows time for challenges to sink in, and above all, prioritizes safety. If he feels cornered, Sunny will resort to fight over flight instinct. Handler must be able to recognize cues and listen to this sensitive horse who really strives to please his humans but has instincts that occasionally overcome him.
