SONORA (CL)

SONORA (CL)

Category: Non-Riding Companion
Age: 21
Gender: Mare

Breed: Quarter Horse

Bio: Sonora is incredibly sweet, affectionate, smart, and reasonable (doesn't spook at much of anything). She was a natural horsemanship clinic horse for a trainer for several years when she was younger and was started as a cutting horse. (She is a registered quarter horse, cutting bred.) She is easy to handle and easy to keep, other than needing medication daily and needing to be clipped once a year. She was diagnosed with Cushing's disease in 2021 and has been on Prascend twice a day since. Her coat is shedding out better each year since she's been on the medication, but she still needs to be clipped in early summer and will most likely continue to need that, especially if she lives somewhere where it gets hot in the summer. She is living in New Mexico now and doing really well.  I have had a major life change and really can't afford to take care of her for much longer. I really want her to go to a home where she can be out in plenty of space with other horses or at least one other horse. She is a great companion horse and she is safe for kids to be around. I have put kids on her and led them around and she does great. I haven't ridden her in over ten years so she would need work before being ridden which is why I said "non-riding". She also has a heart condition (Atrial Fibrillation) that prevents her from being worked too hard. The vet says that she can walk, trot, even lope gently - she can do gentle work in a round pen or arena, but nothing where her heart rate is going to get really high. I have recently started training her with positive reinforcement training and she is doing well with it. With enough time, I think I could get her to where I could ride her again- just to be able to go on trails and do low-key stuff. I currently take her on walks on trails and let her swim in the river nearby and she loves that. Unfortunately I just don't have the money to continue to work with her or to provide her with the life she deserves. I love her deeply and can only let her go to a home where she will never be abused or treated harshly. She needs to be treated with love and care and she needs her medication for the rest of her life. I have had her since she was two years old so I know her whole life history and can share that with an interested home/family.
