SONORA (CL)

SONORA (CL)

Category: Non-Riding Companion
Age: 22
Gender: Mare

Breed: Quarter Horse

Bio: Sonora is a very sweet and affectionate Quarter horse mare. She is cutting bred and was started as a cutting horse when she was young. She was a clinic horse for a while, demonstrating round pen training for audiences. She is now 22 years old and has not been ridden for 10-12 years. I have had her since she was 2. She was diagnosed with Cushing's disease in 2021, and I have managed to keep it under control with medication and proper diet. She is on Prascend and would need to continue with that as well as an appropriate diet. I currently feed her grass hay, alfalfa, and a grain called Crypto-Aero and she is doing well although she could stand to gain a bit of weight at the moment. In the past couple of years, I have done some positive reinforcement training with her but have not gotten to the point of being able to ride her. I have had to go slow and just haven't gotten very far (not because of her, because of my life circumstances). I do think she could probably be ridden again with gentle training. She has a heart arrhythmia and needs to be trained and worked with (and possibly ridden) gently. She is fine but cannot be worked really hard. She is the sweetest and has great ground manners, loads perfectly, and is affectionate. My vet has said she could be transitioned to a pasture if done slowly. I can trailer her somewhere to a new home. Her cushings management does need to continue. I am happy to talk if you have any questions or concerns. She is a lovely horse! She would make a wonderful companion and could possibly be trained gently to ride again. I have led her around with children on her back bareback as well and she is great with them. She is just the sweetest.
