From Neglect to Nurture:

Maeve's Path to a Forever Home

In the past two years, CHR has seen a staggering 200% increase in animal control seizures. This rise reflects the growing need for intervention in cases where horses suffer from neglect and inadequate care. One such case brought Maeve, Dublin, and Pluto to Colorado Horse Rescue, three horses who had endured difficult circumstances but found hope and healing in a new chapter of their lives.

These three equines came from a family struggling with tough circumstances, leading to significant neglect in their care. Pluto, a miniature horse, had severely overgrown hooves due to lack of farrier care. Dublin and Maeve, both larger horses, had suffered a significant amount of weight loss. Upon arrival, their body conditions were alarmingly low, prompting an immediate veterinary evaluation.

Dublin’s condition was the most dire. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur, equine asthma, and his ribs were only covered by skin. The muscle along his topline was almost completely gone, showing the extent of his malnourishment. Maeve, younger than Dublin, had a better chance at recovery since she had retained more weight and muscle. Pluto initially appeared to be in better shape due to his thick, fluffy pony coat. However, once Dr. Bruce placed his hands on him, he realized he, too, was too thin.

After much consideration, Dr. Bruce determined that the most compassionate decision was euthanasia for Dublin. While difficult, euthanasia is a safe and humane solution when suffering cannot be alleviated. This choice prevented further suffering and ensured he would not endure prolonged pain.

In the following months, Maeve and Pluto continued to gain weight and strength at Colorado Horse Rescue. With proper nutrition, veterinary care, and time, both regained their health. Maeve’s coat became glossy, and she reached a healthy weight. Due to her age and history, she was determined to be best suited as a companion rather than a riding horse. Pluto, with his small stature and gentle nature, found the perfect home with adopters who adore miniature horses. His new family met him on his very first day at CHR, and after months of rehabilitation, they were thrilled to officially welcome him into their herd.

Maeve’s journey took a little longer. She joined CHR’s Companion Connection program, where skilled volunteers worked with her on groundwork skills, helping her gain confidence and prepare for a future home. Her patience paid off—she was recently adopted by Alyssa who first discovered her through the Home for Every Horse video that highlighted her intake and progress at CHR. Now, Maeve is settling into her new home, surrounded by care and companionship, just as she deserves.

Alyssa, said “Maeve and Laney hit it off right away, Laney was so excited to see Maeve arrive! These two have literally become inseparable. Where Maeve goes, Laney goes (even at dinner time!) Lots of playful running in the pasture!”
