PAINTING THE HORSE IN PLEIN AIR
October 18th – 19th, 9am-12pm

This workshop is intended to help you gain new information about drawing and painting horses while capturing their essence when painting on location (Plein Air). Join us and participate in learning new information that can help you produce your signature style while incorporating the spontaneity of working in real time. All levels welcome!

Saturday – Make Your Mark
On Saturday, Richard Rodriguez will focus on studying and drawing the horse from life and discuss incorporating marks and abstract shapes to emphasize shape and form. Richard will discuss how simplifying painting by using marks can be a live spark that generates enthusiasm and motivation through the simple act of creating them. The type of marks you choose to create, make up the building blocks of your artwork. A variety of marks adds interest to your work and helps the viewer’s eye move around the surface. This encourages the viewer to engage in your work and become emotionally connected.

Sunday – Explore Plein Air Painting
On Sunday, Elizabeth Rouland will demonstrate the art of painting horses in real time. She’ll guide you through working quickly to capture the essence of a scene, while also sharing insights on tools, setup, and technique. Elizabeth will introduce the method of plein air painting — derived from the French phrase “en plein air,” meaning “in the open air.” This approach involves painting outdoors, directly observing the subject, and focusing on natural light, color, and atmosphere. Celebrated for its immediacy and spontaneity, plein air painting allows artists to connect deeply with their subject and bring a sense of life and vibrancy to the canvas.

Please see the attached list of materials to bring.
